Small Business Security
I read an interesting article that one of our clients dropped off from The Wall Street Journal (click to here to read, it is worth your time). It talks about a new trend in security. Hackers have recently been all over the headlines by tackling large companys like Sony, however now they are targetting small businesses. Key stroke loggers, a popular virus designed to capture every single keystroke made, are being slipped into computers to capture everything from credit card information, accounting data, video game accounts and even social network information.
Small businesses typically run bare essentials when it comes to security practices. Sometimes people don't even notice when their anti-virus is expired or malfunctioning. I see weak passwords almost on a daily basis, however it is getting better as myself and the rest of us here at Rayne Tech preach best security practices. Hardware firewalls are almost non-existent in many cases.
Weak passwords are worse than no password when it comes to Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 as the system will not allow remote connections to the computer if a password is not present. A strong password that changes from time to time with up to date anti-virus/malware software is one of the best defenses you have against hackers.
